The Spanish Communist Party and the soviet political literature
Abstract
At its birth the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) shared the political position advanced by the USSR. However, during the Francoist period the PCE began to adopt a more critical position towards the Soviet regime. Particularly from 1968 these criticisms met opposition within the party that led to the formation of splinter groups. For its part the Soviet Union remained cold towards the PCE and showed little enthusiasm for the splinter groups to its left. Instead, the Soviets praised the transition to democracy while taking a firm line against Spanish membership of Nato.
